Quantification of methane emissions from UK biogas plants

چکیده
The rising number of operational biogas plants in the UK brings a new emissions category to consider for methane monitoring, quantification and reduction. Minimising losses from atmosphere is critical not only because their contribution global warming but also with respect sustainability renewable energy production. Mobile greenhouse gas surveys were conducted detect plumes southern England that varied size, waste feed input materials utilization. Gaussian plume modelling was used estimate total ten based on repeat passes through plumes. Methane emission rates ranged 0.1 58.7 kg CH4 hr-1, percentage relative calculated production rate between 0.02 8.1%. average 15.9 loss 3.7%. In general, smaller farm higher than larger food plants. We suggest may account 0.4 3.8%, an being 1.9% excluding sewage sludge

متن کاملThe potential for methane emissions from groundwaters of the UK.
Methane (CH4) is only a trace constituent of the atmosphere but an important greenhouse gas. Although groundwater is unlikely to be a major source of atmospheric CH4, its contribution to the CH4 budget of the UK has up to now been poorly characterised. Groundwater CH4 concentrations have been measured on 85 samples from water-supply boreholes and a further eight from other miscellaneous water s...
متن کاملAtmospheric constraints on global emissions of methane from plants
[1] We investigate whether a recently proposed large source of CH4 from vegetation can be reconciled with atmospheric measurements. Atmospheric transport model simulations with and without vegetation emissions are compared with background CH4, d C-CH4 and satellite measurements. For present–day CH4 we derive an upper limit to the newly discovered source of 125 Tg CH4 yr . Analysis of preindustr...

متن کاملMethane emissions from cattle.
Increasing atmospheric concentrations of methane have led scientists to examine its sources of origin. Ruminant livestock can produce 250 to 500 L of methane per day. This level of production results in estimates of the contribution by cattle to global warming that may occur in the next 50 to 100 yr to be a little less than 2%. Many factors influence methane emissions from cattle and include th...
